****IN WINTER SEASON PLEASE READ****
Our mid-mountain location is amazing for true ski-in/out, but only guests that bring 4-wheel drive cars or snow chains will be able to drive the steep access road and have the best experience. In Summer, walking to Togari's shops and restaurants is possible (20 mins) but in winter there is no walking access to the village. The lodge is an idyllic ski-in ski-out location at Togari Onsen, and is great fun for 1-night stays without a car, but if you are planning to stay longer, then we recommend that you should bring a car. When choosing a rental car, please be certain that it equipped with four or all-wheel drive and has snow tires. We are happy to suggest rental car companies
Regarding Insects:
The Japanese countryside has a lot of insects! We try to regard them as friends, and don’t like to use too much chemical sprays in our properties. Your property is checked for insects before each stay, but sometimes, no matter what we do, a stink bug or spider will come out. Please use the bug spray provided, or wrap a stink bug in tape and throw it in the trash. In the Summer months, if you notice a bees nest starting to form outside, please let us know, so that we can take it down.
Sustainability
We are committed to reducing our plastic waste. We do not supply disposable toothbrushes, so please bring your own. We sell travel toothbrush kits in the vending machine on the ground floor. We are also strongly committed to reducing our reliance on fossil fuels, and our electricity is provided through a 100% renewable energy plan (We would love to get solar panels but there's too much snow here in winter!)
Snow safety:
Do not stand, walk, or allow children to play under snow covered roof eaves as they may avalanche suddenly. Objects such as beer cans, shovels, skis, or toys can be buried in minutes when it starts to snow. These objects can become lethal projectiles if caught up in snow clearing machines so don't leave anything outside.
We now offer online check-in for your safety and convenience but we still perform daily maintenance (checking on fuel levels, plumbing, rubbish collection, and snow removal) so you can have a hassle-free stay !
Please let us know well in advance your exact time of arrival. We will be happy share our local knowledge to help you plan your stay.
Due to Japanese law, we need to take photocopies of all international guests' passports. In compliance with local fire department regulations, we and/or a member of our staff will stay on the property.
Caretakers have a separate entrance, kitchen, and living space.
Directions
****IF DRIVING PLEASE READ**** Guests that bring 4 Wheel Drive cars will be able to access our parking lot and have the best experience. If you have the option for 4WD with snow tires from your car rental, it is well worth paying the extra for the freedom to come and go as you please and visit the many different ski areas nearby. Between December and March, 2-Wheel Drive cars, even with snow chains, may not be able to get here. If your car is 2WD and heavy snow is forecast, please arrange to arrive before 6PM and park at Togari Hot Spring Ski area Number 3 parking lot (behind the onsen). If you tell us your planned arrival time 24 hours in advance we can shuttle you from your car to Hunters Gate.
Car
Exit the highway at the Toyoda Iiyama Interchange. Turn right at the light and proceed up and down the hill into Iiyama City (on the 117). The lodge is 25 minutes from the highway and 20 minutes form Iiyama station. In winter, vehicles with four/all-wheel drive and snow tires are highly recommended. We are happy to advise you on rentals.
Nearest Station
The lodge is 3 kilometers from TogariNozawa-Onsen Station. It is around 1 hour and 45 minutes to Karuizawa by train.
Free Pick-up and Drop-off from TogariNozawa-Onsen Station
We are able to provide check-in pick-up or check-out drop-off for groups who will only stay 1 night. Reservation is required by 21:00 the night before. Don't forget to bring your groceries with you!
Taxi
Taxis are the easiest option from Togari-Nozawa Onsen Station. A cab ride up to the lodge should cost less than 2000 yen. A cab to Nozawa Onsen from the lodge should cost less than 5000 yen. We are always happy to help you arrange transportation by taxi or charter bus to and from the lodge to other ski resorts or local sightseeing spots, but advance booking - at least 1 week ahead - is necessary to avoid disappointment.
Area Information
Togari Onsen gets the same massive snowstorms as Nozawa Onsen, boasts fantastic views, and has high-speed lifts. It is not as big as Nozawa Ski Resort, but it is much less busy and has plenty of terrain for all skill levels: powder hounds, technical riders, leisure riders, and families. Japan's first downhill fatbiking park (Yuki Chari Park) opened here in 2018 and is an exciting alternative to skiiing and snowboarding.
A few Japanese-owned restaurants, bars and shops dot the bases of the resort (1.5 kilometers away), as well as two fantastic natural onsen hot springs complete with outside baths. The locally-owned restaurants operate year-round and you can enjoy original dishes with local ingredients. This is the real taste of the Japanese countryside.
Togari is not nearly as crowded as Hakuba or Nozawa Onsen. For guests looking for a lively nightlife, Togari will probably be a little too quiet; however, unlike other resorts, it is still easy to get a table in the evening and we are happy to give you recommendations. The village shop is ok for the basics, (and run by a charming little old lady!) but you’ll probably want to go into Iiyama proper for a wider selection.
Togari Onsen Ski Resort
The ski resort is open every year from around Christmas to around the end of March.
Taxis to nightlife areas in Nozawa and Iiyama can be difficult to obtain at short notice. There are buses from the ski resort into central Iiyama or trains to Togari-Nozawa Onsen station, but they are not so frequent. This is another reason why we highly recommend bringing a car.
